The Attention
Brian Henry

To holler in the place to be, to crack,
to upstage, outsource, hollow out
from kernel to core, marrow to fleck,
to shuck from the inside out, be shot,
dress a lamp in red and yawn, and black,
twist an ankle, pop a knee, ligament,
a bad sprain, to retrain a foot to pair,
to walk, to roll with chin tucked
to chest, to roll twice, real quick,
to double oneself, blood unspent,
pushed through, reclined, a tired act,
starched past white, to wheel a chair,
the first to die, be strafed, or not,
to crouch to laugh to sleep to shout.
